Ship changes to an existing codebase from specs, not chat history

OpenSpec writes every change as a delta against your current specs. You learn the full loop in Claude Code: propose, review, apply, verify, archive. Then you adopt it on a mature repo.

Who it's for

  • Engineers changing a codebase that is years old, not starting a new one
  • Teams that lose agreed requirements in chat history between sessions
  • Leads choosing between OpenSpec, BMAD, Spec Kit and Kiro
  • Teams where people use different agents: Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Gemini CLI

What you'll be able to do

  • Install @fission-ai/openspec, run openspec init, and take a small change from /opsx:propose to archive (Install + Your First Change)
  • Review proposal.md, design.md, tasks.md and specs/ in the right order and send weak proposals back (The 4 Artifacts)
  • Write ADDED, MODIFIED, REMOVED and RENAMED deltas with RFC 2119 keywords that pass openspec validate --strict (Spec Format Mastery)
  • Tune profiles, openspec/config.yaml and per_artifact rules so the agent stops re-deriving project rules (Profiles, config.yaml & Project Context)
  • Adopt OpenSpec on a mature repo one domain at a time, without backfilling every spec (Brownfield Patterns)
  • Pick the right framework for a project with a decision tree across OpenSpec, BMAD, Spec Kit, Kiro, Spec Workflow MCP and a raw .tasks/ folder (OpenSpec vs BMAD vs Spec Kit vs Kiro)
Hands-on

What you'll build

01

A /health endpoint shipped end-to-end through propose, apply and archive

02

An openspec/config.yaml with a real project description and per-artifact rules

03

A pre-commit hook that runs openspec validate --strict

04

A saved filter views feature on an existing orders app, including a mid-change pivot, verify, archive and one PR with the full artifact trail

  1. 01
    Why OpenSpec? Brownfield-First Spec-Driven Development

Why OpenSpec exists, what 'brownfield-first' actually means in practice, the delta-spec model, the five stated principles, and when OpenSpec is the wrong tool.

    25-30 min
  2. 02
Install + Your First Change End-to-End

Install @fission-ai/openspec, run openspec init with Claude Code auto-detected, and ship a tiny change end-to-end with the propose workflow.

    30-40 min
  3. 03
The 4 Artifacts: Proposal, Design, Tasks & Specs

Tour the four files OpenSpec generates — proposal.md, design.md, tasks.md, specs/*.md — and learn how reviewers read them as a coherent change package.

    30-40 min
  4. 04
Spec Format Mastery: RFC 2119, Scenarios & Delta Specs

Write requirements that pass openspec validate --strict — RFC 2119 keywords, 4-hashtag scenarios, ADDED/MODIFIED/REMOVED/RENAMED deltas, and the hidden-requirement detector.

    35-45 min
  5. 05
The Full Workflow with Claude Code

Walk a real change end-to-end with Claude Code: propose → review → apply → verify → archive. Includes bulk-archive, openspec check, and project-scoped profile resolution.

    35-45 min
  6. 06
    Profiles, config.yaml & Project Context

Master the v1.2+ profile system (core vs custom), openspec/config.yaml, per-artifact rules, and project context optimization — the levers that adapt OpenSpec to your stack.

    30-40 min
  7. 07
OpenSpec vs BMAD vs Spec Kit vs Kiro

Head-to-head comparison: OpenSpec, BMAD, GitHub Spec Kit, Amazon Kiro, Spec Workflow MCP, and a raw .tasks/ pattern. Dimensions, trade-offs, and a decision tree for picking the right one.

    30-40 min
  8. 08
Multi-Tool Integration: 25+ Agents Across Editors

Use OpenSpec from Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Windsurf, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot, and others — switching tools mid-change without losing the spec trail.

  9. 09
Brownfield Patterns: Adopting OpenSpec in a Mature Codebase

Add OpenSpec to a 5-year-old codebase without rewriting history — onboarding playbook, project context priming, and the most common pitfalls.

Capstone: Ship a Real Feature End-to-End

Apply everything: propose a real feature, walk the full workflow with Claude Code, customize a profile mid-change, verify, archive, and produce a reviewable artifact trail.

FAQ

Questions about this course

What do I need installed?

Node.js 18+, Claude Code installed and signed in, and a project with at least one source file. A scratch repo works. OpenSpec needs no API keys and no MCP server. Other agents work too; one tutorial covers Cursor, Codex, Windsurf and Gemini CLI.

How long does it take?

The course has 10 tutorials. The listed lesson times add up to about 5.5 to 7 hours. The first install tutorial ships a one-line change in about 20 minutes.

I already took the SDD & BMAD course. Is this a repeat?

No. That course teaches spec-first foundations and BMAD. This one is OpenSpec: lightweight, delta-based, built for brownfield code. One tutorial compares the two head to head and covers when to run both side by side.

Does this work on a large legacy codebase?

Yes, that is the main use case. You init in brownfield mode, so specs/ starts empty. You write project context once, then add specs one domain at a time as you change code. The brownfield tutorial covers the pitfalls.
